Like many performers, my interest started at an early age – my musical career, in particular, began at the age of five, when my parents first brought a piano into the house. I quickly realised that I quite enjoyed playing around on this new instrument, and not long after began taking lessons. Throughout school, I tried my hand at a variety of different instruments, including recorder, cello, guitar, tenor horn and trumpet, but ultimately settled on the combination of piano and saxophone, which are my main instruments to this day. It was also at school that I first took an interest in theatre, playing Fagin aged 11 in a primary school production in South-East London, which kickstarted a love of being on the stage. I carried on acting in and putting on plays and musicals throughout my time at school (although I soon realised I didn’t quite have the singing or dancing skills to make a career in musical theatre!)
Having been exposed to an eclectic selection of music from a young age, I first started playing jazz as a teenager. As well as being ideally suited to my choice of instruments, I discovered that jazz opened up a whole new avenue of expression via improvisation – something which I had had little experience of previously, and was certainly a little nervous of to begin with!
I later combined my musical and theatrical interests, studying Music and Drama at the University of Manchester, where I gained valuable experience playing in and leading jazz ensembles, as well as appearing in student plays and short films. Around the same time, I began acting in amateur productions at my local theatre, where I met my first agent, got my first professional jobs and eventually decided to take the plunge and pursue a full-time career as an actor and musician.
